Stephen M. Spencer, M.Sc., is President of natural search marketing firm Netconcepts. 28. Matt Cutts

Why would we have a software engineer on our list of top marketers of 2008?

If you are interested in online marketing, Google is big player in the space. You can argue that it controls most of it. Thousands of people look for clues from Matt’s words to what Google might be planning or doing. Matt’s blog is one of the top online marketing blogs.

Before Google, Matt worked on his Ph.D. in computer graphics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has an M.S. from UNC-Chapel Hill, and B.S. degrees in both mathematics and computer science from the University of Kentucky. So, is Matt the smartest guy on our list? He is probably the one that certainly has the most education!

Dr. Flint McGlaughlin is Director of Digital Trust Inc (DTI), which publishes the Marketing Experiments Journal.

26. John Reese

John Reese has been doing Internet marketing for over 10 years. In 2007, John released Blogrush, a content syndication network that claimed to be capable of sending free, targeted traffic to blogs. There were few supporters of Blogrush and too many detractors. In late October, 2008, John announced that he will be shutting BlogRush down. Perhaps one of the largest failures of blog tools in 2008. And regardless to what you might have thought of the service, John provided an excellent example of how to use the blogosphere to virally market an idea. The buzz he created was tremendous – a lesson for all marketers.

One of our personal favorites, Linda Bustos, managed to increase the GetElastic blog`s rss-subscriptions from approximately 1,000 to over 6,000+ in less than a year, exceeding company goals. Linda is an Emerging Media Analyst for Elastic Path Software. She is the main writer for the GetElastic blog; her posts always offer great insight into SEO, PPC, and just about anything ecommerce related. She has also guest blogged on the Invesp blog a couple of times.

You can listen to Linda at conferences such as shop.org, SES, Internet Retailer, and blogworld, among many others. She’ll probably have a camera set up to interview someone like Avinash Kaushik.
