Who is making money in the current economy?

There are many answers, but I can guarantee one thing. It will not be those businesses who are THINKING about selling, it is the people who are taking decisive action.

I am very familiar with analysis paralysis, but we have to overcome the temptation to think, think, think, and start to DO.

Now, I am not talking about being sloppy, let’s take a good look at how your business can take action today, and do it profitably …

First I will let you in on a mistake I made.

As I say above, I have a habit of over thinking things. I also have a habit of “gold plating” – over burdening myself and my products with features, and perfectionism.

Those two traits combine to hold me back. Of course, my products are well thought out and feature-rich, but it does mean I spend way longer than necessary to get them out to market, which is an opportunity cost if you think about it.

Take my Authority Blogger Course for example. Instead of focusing on one narrow lesson, I made it full of everything from writing, SEO, selling services, through to product creation and marketing. While people have bought in to the pre-release and have seen great success following the material thus far, I have put the launch back because it is still not complete!

Don’t make my mistake:

  1. Launch focused, quick products to your own list and audience
  2. Put customers onto a customer list segmented from your general audience
  3. Use their feedback to improve the product for a version 2, with added value, and new products
  4. Gather affiliate partners
  5. Launch your product to a wider audience along with affiliates

… and repeat!

You might think your current ideas or products are not good enough, not ready, but actually you are not the best judge – your customers will tell you when you are ready. Show a select few what you are working on, along with trusted advisers. Friends and family will be no better judge than you, this needs objectivity. Brutal objectivity.

Make it 80% perfect then continually improve – you can even give customers of version 1 free upgrades if you feel bad or worried. Just get something out there. Make profits and instead of endless analysis, use the market as your education.

As the great philosopher Wayne Gretzky once said

You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take

Great reminder, Chris… I’m working on a project now that, if I didn’t heed this advice, could easily take on some serious bloat, and slow the whole thing down.

And there’s really no need; launch it, get it out there, and use feedback—which is like gold—to tweak it and make it better. Sounds like a darn good plan.

Chris – this is so true. I’ve spent so much time thinking, observing, obsessing rather than doing. I’m making a concerted effort to DO in 2009. In fact I wrote a post last week on “Do you think to much” which addresses this subject as well. Nice kick!

Chris, you’ve inspired me to finish a project this week! Thanks for reminding all of us to “just do it”.

Chris,
I love your analysis paralysis purfect! You don’t know how many times I have had to kick clients in the butt. It’s like if you want to do this you have to do it now. But then some clients don’t even take the time to write a marketing plan or even know what direction they are going in. All they know is they want to be on page 1 with Google. Sad but true. I am big proponent of education brings knowledge and subsides fear. Maybe that is the AP (analysis paralysis) fear. I really enjoyed your article.

Chris, I know from personal experience that sometimes the fear of failure holds me back, so I procrastinate just TAKING ACTION because I’m afraid I’ll do it “wrong.”

But I’ve also learned that experience is the best teacher. So better to fall on your face a few times and gather important experience, than to sit on your butt and watch life pass you by.
