With the indulgence of the Invesp Team, I’m going to take Conversion Optimization and show you how it can be applied to link building. If you’re doing any kind of outreach, link bait, or targeted under the table link buying, then this post will show you how to up both your contact rate and conversion rate on link acquisition, all by making sure you’re doing some very simple things with your home pages. My focus is primarily E-Commerce Link Building, so we’re going to focus primarily on sites selling something, and not on sites profiting from advertisements.

1. Be Transparent: You’re asking someone to link to your page. Too many times I get generic link request emails asking me to link to some site I’ve never heard of. If that’s your situation, you need to personalize your emails, identify yourself, and try and initiate a real conversation with the link target. I find that adding a telephone number, and having someone actually answer it, greatly improves my link contact rate.

2. Split Test Emails: The same way you would split test sales creative, is the same way you need to test your linking emails. Test everything: Name, subject line, email request, gender, signature, time of day sent, which day it gets sent out, and more. These things can have a tremendous factor in upping your link conversion rate. What’s that, you say? You’re not sending link emails? Perhaps we need to have a little chat, then.

3. Provide the Potential User with Trust and Credibility: If you’re lucky enough to get someone interested in your linkbait, or link contact email, then you need to provide them with some sort of trust. Now is the time to flesh out your about us section, your privacy seals, your phone numbers and your contact page so people feel secure and happy to link to you.

4. Help the User Link to you: If you’re running linkbait, then provide prominent tools to sites like Delicious, WordPress and Blogger. For actual product and sales pages, widgets that allow automatic embedding can work wonders for legitimate focused anchor text into a product page. Test and track to see which type of widgets and formats get embedded the most. That way you can leverage your widgets effectively and generate more links per visitor.

5. Turn Customers into Links: Once you have a satisfied customer (don’t try this with a pissed off customer, it will turn out badly), you can offer them a discount or free product in return for a link. A good way to do test this is on the thank you page after purchase, and you can test which creative generates the most link. To see an actual example of this in practice, take a look at this freebie software offer from Caphyon Software.

6. Split Test Your Linkbait: I don’t see this one done too often. If you run enough linkbait, you can split test different versions to see which garners more links and traffic. You can test differences in images, headlines, and even content to gain a better idea of what works. If you’re truly adventurous, you will look for patterns and create templates that help you launch more successful linkbaits as compared to your competitors.

The ability we have as marketers to influence linking campaigns are tremendous. All it takes is a little bit of effort, some creative testing and monitoring, and you will be out link building competitors in no time. And need I remind you that with links, come rankings?

Did you say “Traffic”?

Wrong answer!

If you read blogs, forums and twitter comments you would be forgiven for thinking that “traffic” is something you can turn on and off like a tap. Turn one way and you get a burst of traffic like a fire hose, turn it the other and you get a drip-drip-dribble, or all the way and it switches off entirely.

While some people find it useful to think in these terms, actually it holds back most people because this way of imagining sends you to make some pretty dodgy decisions.

Recall that part in the Matrix where Neo is told “There is no spoon”? Well, think there is no such thing as “Traffic”.

Instead of traffic, think of living, breathing human beings arriving at your site.

Why?

Where from?

What are they looking for?

What will they find?

Where will they go next?

When you think of “traffic” you think of herding, you imagine a “flow”, but there is no flow, just individuals. Understanding those individuals is the key to getting more people to visit, and crucially, get them to do something mutually beneficial (like buy your stuff).

Still don’t believe me? OK, buy some traffic. You can buy it at eBay, on forums, it’s easy to find. $50 for a gajilllion “hits”. Think that will be $50 well spent? Even if you monetize with CPM ads you will likely not see a cent in return, because most ad networks are savvy to junk traffic and block suspicious IP addresses.

Even Adwords is not a guaranteed faucet style traffic source because the human beings clicking your ads (or not) are impacted by all kinds of things outside your control, not least your competition, but also increasingly what is going on in the news.

As I try to tell my SEO friends, stop optimizing for search engines and start optimizing for people. That is my secret route to online success in 2009!

More big-ticket Internet Marketing launches – I think this is a safe one. 2007 and 2008 saw a steady stream of big multi-million dollar sell-out internet marketing product launches, and I think 2009 will see just as many, even despite the economic downturn.

Flight to ROI – While I think Social Media will continue to be a big hit for the buzz crowd, I think more priority than every will be placed on testing, tracking, conversion tweaking and return on investment, which means “branding” and “eyeballs” will take a back seat and social media campaigns will have to return benefits over and above traffic spikes.

Dotcoms with Business Plans – Which leads me to think that there will still be money for startups, but only those with a business plan. Already funded companies will have to find a revenue stream and quick or get bought by a sugar-daddy (I am looking at you Twitter), because I don’t think back of a napkin is going to cut it in the coming quarters.

Continuity versus Single Product – Everybody is going to want a continuity product, either a subscription based service or a membership program. Predictable cashflow, constant customer contact, and a built-in focus group – it makes sense!

Google goes democratic – The days of technical SEO wizardry seem to be waning, and outright manipulation will be possible for only the top SEO geniuses. For the rest of us, it seems the trend we have been seeing for some time now, ie. valuable and viral content, will be the order of the day.

The problem is, this kind of focus can be counter-productive …

What is a search result?

It’s just a link on a page.

Yes, sorry, but it is not a direct line to a gazillion bucks or a “hack” that feeds you money like an ATM!

Ranking number one means nothing in of itself. I could be you are the only person in the world to have put those words together on a web page. Or it might mean your particular page has been linked to more often.

In many industries there are search terms that people try to achieve but have little bottom line impact. These search terms only impress others who are trying to rank for those phrases. Customers don’t use single word or two word searches, only your competitors care about them. Rather than “lawyer” they might look for “road accident injury lawyer seattle”. The former impresses your bar buddies, the latter brings in dollars.

Just because you are the first result for a particular search does not mean anyone will ever do that search, that huge numbers of people will perform that search, or that there is any value to be had in ranking for it.

Don’t get me wrong, ranking in search engines can have huge benefits.

But you need to rank for phrases that people are looking for, and that convert into useful transactions, or actually mean more than a few random clicks.

Compare the searches you make on a daily basis. Some will be random, some will have a goal, some you will be simply browsing, and some will appear very strange to the site owner!

When thinking about search you need to answer these questions:

What question is the visitor asking?

What is the goal behind the question?

How can I provide the best answer to the relevant questions?

Aiming to rank for questions that have no impact on your business is just a vanity competition. Rather than impressing your peers with a #1 result that customers never see, instead you need to go for the real gold!

When you think of keyword research, you likely associate it with search engine optimization and the importance of including keywords in various tags and body copy to appear higher in search results. But keyword research is essential to your entire online marketing strategy, and has applications beyond SEO, including: Information Architecture.

When you first set out to organize your site structure and decide on how to label your categories, you may have to make decisions between synonyms – especially for e-commerce sites. For example, you might have to choose between “athletic shoes,” “runners,” “running shoes,” “trainers” and “sneakers.” How do you make your best guess which is most popular? Head off to Google Trends and compare each term, and make sure you set which geographic market you operate in, as there can be regional differences in preferred terms:

One thing to watch out for is some terms have more than one meaning – like “runners” (table runners, stair runners, wedding runners, runners knee, etc) or “trainers” (personal trainers, game trainers, dog trainers). You may, from this graph, conclude your best label is “running shoes” as it far outperforms “athletic shoes.” If your site has been up for a while and you’re considering a restructure, you may also check on your pay-per-click data, comparing these keywords for impressions and clicks to your site, which would indicate that the search performed had intent to find information on products you sell. A searcher looking for “dog trainers” is not likely to click on an ad for “Nike Trainers.” If you get far more traffic for “runners” than “running shoes” then you may reconsider your current category label.

Using the customer-preferred term also aids in usability. People scan for “trigger words” that match exactly how they describe the product themselves. Customer thinks “where are the running shoes?” and scans the menus for that term, and may miss the lonely “athletic shoes” at the top.

Internal Site Search Optimization

Your site search may not be returning results (or the results you want) for user searches because your customers describe your products in ways you never thought of – including mis-spellings. There are several ways you can research terms to tweak your search tool.

An obvious one is your internal site search logs – mine them for frequent searches and test what results appear. Proactively, you can use the Buzzillions reviews site which employs customer tagging, Amazon tags, a thesaurus or the Google Keyword Research Tool to look for synonyms.

Sourcing New Products

Does your internal site search log reveal customers are looking for Nike First Touch II Astro Turf Trainers en masse? You might consider adding it to your product mix if it’s a hot item. You can also surf Amazon Bestsellers and use the Google Keyword Tool and segment your keyword results by last month’s search volume (to identify current winners).

Pay Per Click Advertising

Of course, keyword research is essential to PPC advertising. But many marketers stop at the Google Keyword Tool or an enterprise tool like Keyword Discovery. One of the tedious aspects of PPC keyword research, and most difficult to thoroughly perform with just the traditional tools is negative keyword research <– This link describes how to use Google Suggest (now integrated with the Google.com search box), Google Shopping and Buzzillions. You can also use eBay for negative keyword research and hack Google Analytics to expose the exact search phrases for your broad matched PPC keywords.

Email Offers

You can identify hot products using Google Trends, Amazon Bestsellers lists or your Analytics, search and sales reports and use them in your email campaigns.

And while RSS membership is a great indicator of how powerful a blog is, there are few other factors to measure the power and reach of a blog. So, for the purposes of this post, we will list the top SEO blogs based on several criteria:

1. By RSS membership

2. By number of incoming links

3. By the number of pages posted on the blog

4. By the ratio links to pages: since incoming links target specific pages on a blog, we will analyze which of the SEO blogs was able to attract the most links per post.

5. Unique monthly visitors: how many visitors did the blog receive during the last month. The data provided here is captured based on unique visitor numbers from Compete.

6. By Pages per visit: how many pages does a visitor navigate through prior to exiting the site. The data provided here is captured based on last month page per visit numbers from Compete

7. Ratio of visitors to pages: my assumption is that sites with more pages or with pages that rank for more keywords will receive more visitors. This ratio will indicate how many visitors different site pages are able to attract.

8. By Google page rank

9. The ultimate rank: This will provide a weighted average based on how well a site ranks for five of the above factors. These factors are

RSS

Incoming links

Pages

Monthly visitors

Pages per visit

Google PR

For the purposes of this blog, I only considered 25 different blogs. If you think I missed a blog or you would like to add one to the list, please leave it in the comments.

Top SEO blogs by number of incoming links:

For the purposes of incoming links, we used Yahoo site explorer to report the number of incoming links to a blog. Couple of things to note here:

We used the blog URL address,

We excluded links from the domain it self

On the surface the number of incoming links seems like a good way to measure the power of a blog. Yet it has some major problems since some of the blogs might be able to attract links by guest posting, being an editor on another large blog, or by getting included in a blog roll of another blog. For the purposes of our ultimate rank, we gave the number of incoming links a less value in the final calculation.

This is an update of our last post with 5 more more great tools to add to your list.

Never undermine the importance of testing and analyzing your site. On the most basic level, analytics data will help ensure whether or not you’re on the right track. And if the data is reviewed and utilized on the site it will help you increase conversion rates. Who doesn’t use analytic tools these days? You’d be surprised. We have come across ecommerce site marketing VP’s that can barely tell us the number of visitors, conversion rates, or results and rankings for paid and unpaid traffic. Now, for those of you who are familiar with analytics data and tools, I thought this was a fun little blog that may pique your interest to what’s new out there.

We’ve worked with these 15 tools that can be found on Techlicous’s to help analyze and gain a better understanding of your site’s traffic.

Google Analytics provides so much information that it can sometimes be overwhelming. Not only does Google Analytics give you detailed information on where you are getting your traffic from, it simplifies the process of making improvements to your landing page and website as a whole. The best thing about Google Analytics is that it is free to all advertisers, publishers, and site owners.

The best thing about Site Meter is that it provides you with real time tracking and instant access to vital information and data about your sites audience.

iPerceptions takes a deeper look at customer behavior by looking at it both on and offline. It’s a great tool to really identify the key concerns of your customers such as their overall satisfaction with your site.

<g:plusone size="tall" href="http://www.invesp.com/blog/seo/seo-software-you-should-start-using.html"></g:plusone>

Let’s face it. Everyone is trying to add the latest and greatest online marketing tools to their site. It is a way to generate traffic, get some link love and become well known within the online community. But I reached a point where I rarely used any new services because I felt that everyone is copying the same ideas. Well, for the last few weeks I have been using one of the most useful SEO software tools available. Sheerseo offers a service that I am sure will become one of the most popular services online.

I know that every online site spends quite a bit of time trying to improve their ranking for site keywords. Of course, one of the first things everyone does is figuring out where the site ranks for these keywords. That generally involved using different tools that will help place a keyword and check your site ranking through these tools.

The problem:

Most small sites will target between 50-200 keywords. Larger sites, can target thousands of keywords. That means that you have to check hundreds of keywords for hundreds of pages.

There was no way to track historical position for site for certain keywords. Most sites end up using a manual process of tracking site progress.

Basically, the process was very labor intensive.

The solution

Sheerseo solves each of these problems.

The site allows you to add up to 200 keywords to check for your site ranking: The interface to add the words is straight forward to use. The current number of keywords sheerseo tracks is 200 but I am sure they will be expanding this in the future.

• You can run the query for either Google or Yahoo

• It also allows you to view your progress

Current & historical referrers

Word density

Indexed pages

Overall, I was very happy with the service. I am sure we will be hearing a lot about Sheerseo in the next months.

Yes, of course, traffic is important, but only the right traffic.

The standard advice is to find keywords that are searched often but there is lower competition for. Seems like reasonable advice, right? Actually this advice is too simplistic, it is missing a vital ingredient.

While you can rank and get some nice traffic flow from these terms, if there is little competition it probably means the term is harder to monetize.

Now there is a big difference between terms that you monetize by selling a product and terms that you monetize with Adsense or any other arbitrage play.

On my own blog I have several terms that I rank for to attract people to my content, from the generic “New Media Consultant” through to specific terms like “Blog Meme“. Each term functions in a different way. Conversions for me though are RSS signups, I know from analysis that I rarely get consultancy work from a first visit.

My search terms are research, informational, “interest”. They are not purchasing terms, people on a mission.

What is on your prospects mind? Which terms match your prospects mission? That is the key to knowing which terms to optimize for.

The Invesp site is mostly about a problem facing businesses, increasing conversion rates. Invesp prospects will be looking for reasons why their conversion rate is poor or looking for advice on boosting conversions.

By contrast take a look at one of my favourite clients who I always pick on, Cogniview. Their products are very much in the “on a mission” category. People don’t look for PDF to Excel conversion software without being very serious. They have a problem and need to fix it.

Don’t optimize for traffic, optimize for psychology. Find people who are in the right mode that matches your offer, buying mode, research mode, conversational mode.

With the right optimization you can make more conversions with lower traffic, making your job much easier and your business way more profitable.
Without traffic you just have potential. No traffic, no sales, ad clicks, leads, feedback, community.

It is easy to understand why webmasters are obsessed with it.

Now as you know, there various sources of traffic, from free to way expensive. All have their place, and the less budget you have the more work you are likely to have to put in.

Small business operators seem to be getting the idea more recently. Larger businesses seem fixated on three tactics; Adwords, banners and SEO.

I am going to let you in on five “secret” sources of traffic. In fact they are common sense, but because common sense is rarely common practice they might seem like secret traffic sources to your clients …

Expired Domains - Old domains can be picked up when expired really rather cheaply. What many people do not realize is a lot of them have links pointing to them, or even garner some type-in hits. For a real snip of a price you can find some real bargains. Buy a whole bunch of them and funnel the search juice and hits to your main property.

Site Purchases - It’s not just expired domains that you can pick up on the cheap. Look out for sites for sale that have inbound links and steady traffic. Avoid the pumped and pimped sites from savvy sellers, what you want are the sites that can attract visits from a variety of sources naturally already but with a bit of tweaking can really perform. Again this traffic can be funneled, 301-redirected or just used as is.

OPT – Other Peoples Traffic. This is the heart of the Squidoo, Facebook, YouTube, MySpace etc tactics. Find a location that naturally attracts attention and leach off it. Another route is to build something attractive that friendly blogs will want to link to. I could even put guest posting under this heading!

Huge and Influential Lists - This is the oldest tactic in the book. It’s so old it makes people overlook it in favor of Social Media Marketing and any other recent buzzword. People forget, but you know it works, right? The key is how it is presented, and absolutely not spam. Call it a Joint Venture, an advertisement, a friendly mention, whatever, getting on a powerful list with a glowing endorsement can be the best converting traffic you have seen. The challenge is getting the right deal on the right list.

Hitching a Ride – Let someone else worry where the traffic is going to come from and just tag along for the ride. This is related to the last point in a way but it stands on its own. Think about the last big promotion in your niche. The PR, the advertising, the fanfare. While you might only be able to siphon off a small percentage of that attention, you will also pay little or nothing to get it. There are two versions of this tactic; partnering or freeloading. When you partner you actually give the main event some of your value, be it as a bonus, a prize or some other service. For example a big product launch might get a free pass to your seminar or ebook. When you freeload what you are doing is finding a bandwagon that is about to start rolling and jump on it. So you look for a story that is about to break big and you do all you can to suck down on some of that traffic.
