When most people hear the phrase “keyword research”, they will either look at you blankly or relate it to the search engine optimization world. In fact keyword research has benefits outside of the search engine optimization practices.

Keyword research is simply the activity of finding out what people are looking for in the search engines, how they phrase those searches, and how many searches are performed. As we will see later in this article, it is also a good idea to see how many other content creators are targeting those phrases to judge your level of competition too.

While we mention search engines, your keyword research is not restricted purely to search considerations. The phrases can come from brainstorming, questionnaires, and reader-submitted comments just as easily.

The key benefits of keyword research are:

  • Discover your prospects most pressing challenges
  • Find exact phrases to use in sales copy
  • Audience’s real versus perceived needs
  • Empathy leads to engagement
  • Discover Phrases for use in Social Media
  • Understand your audience better

If you are not investigating what your prospects are interested in, and actively seeking out, then even if you are not concerned with search traffic then you are still missing out on key insights.

Why would you need to know the level of competition?

Consider you find several topics that are in demand. How do you know which to prioritize?

  1. If there is no competition, could it be that there are no commercial uses for the phrase?
  2. If there is high competition would it be better to pick lower hanging fruit?

You have to balance these, but first you need to know what you are up against.

Ideally you want a phrase that is high demand, low but some competition, and where there is little FREE information on the topic!

Keyword research is easy and non-intrusive. For any of us it is easy to find a spare fifteen minutes, and it does not even involve picking up a telephone.

You might be surprised by what you discover!

Keyword research amplifies the amount of traffic that you can get to your site to a tremendous extent. Not only is this for SEO, it will benefit any website for increasing traffic. It is coming to such a situation that keyword research is now becoming a necessity.

Keyword research will help you decide what kind of content you require on your site. This not only helps guide relevant traffic to your site, but will also differebtiate your content from others’.

I agree. There are so many benefits to keyword research. Though important, I think sometimes SEO initiatives over shadow the importance of keyword research which is why there are some companies who do not do the research.

This really makes me look at keyword research in a new light. Great post, thanks!

good points to remember while deciding the keywords. Keywords should be relevant to your service also. You aimed at low competition keywords but they are not meaningful then that’s of no use.

Thanks

How about:

- Find opportunities for growth.
- Find opportunities for new content for adsense based sites.

All related some way or another to your main points above ;) .

Cheers.

Keyword research is BY FAR the most important step toward a successful SEO or PPC campaign. It will map out how agressive, etc your strategy should be.

Yes, I am with you. you can’t say enough about SEO. Funny thing is that until I actually seen SEO work for me, I thought it was a joke. Keyword Research is now the focal point of any business i start.
