@Spaceman - Finding the restaurant forum was an accident, I was just looking for restaurants. I hadn't thought of forums as a way of finding a decent restaurant before, but now I'm going to use them whenever possible. I think it would be a great idea for travellers. Thanks for your comment.

@Ayat - Excellent point. We all need to be aware of sock puppets that might be lurking in any online conversation. One problem is, when any praise is heaped on a person, organization, etc., others in the conversation are sometimes quick to claim the praiser is a sock puppet. I found a blog post by Lynne Simpson and she lists some pointers for spotting them - http://www.lynnesimpson.net/2007/07/21/spotting-sock-puppets-101/

Google is my best friend. I google anything and everything, and of course opinions count. The more expert and authority like a commentator seems, the better I feel about the decision I am "influenced" to take. I always wonder though, how many companies prop their own "buzz meisters" to do the promoting for them? How would an innocent bystander such as myself know the difference between an authentic buzz meister, and one that is buzzing for all the wrong reasons?

It is rare if one of my friends doesn't have a good suggestion for whatever I am looking for. When I am at a loss, I then google stuff in the area and see what kind of rating critics have given them. If that hasn't decided it, I go to forums. So far I haven't had to go to a forum for a restaurant recommendation yet.
