Steve - The potential for engaging the customer on the web is staggering. I think it is steering web marketing away from typical sites to more user focused and authored content.

Jonathan Mendez points out that Apple discovered a video on YouTube that they are now using for their national TV campaign for the iPod Touch. - not a contest, they just stumbled upon it. http://www.optimizeandprophesize.com/jonathan_mendezs_blog/2007/11/ipod-touch-comm.html

Looking at some of these I think the key is getting people to interact with you. Each gets people to contribute in some way. The interaction keeps people entertained and involved and their contribution enlists others to do the same generating a buzz.

You can have the most boring product in the world and still entice people by having them share real stories or make up fictional ones. You can create an application that lets people deface your product design. You can create a simple game using an icon of your product in some way.

What you need is interaction of some kind and then slip in your product in some way to keep it at the forefront of the buzz.

There's lots of potential here.
