That's an interesting proposition Derek, however how many visitors will comply with choosing the appropriate button? And how many will find it offensive? It's important to keep your customer in mind and see things from their perspective. If you are able to guide them subtly through the conversion process by targeting a specific gender, that would get you better results.

Great article. I have always tried to target specific genders when I can tell from the keywords, but most of the time it is very difficult. You could include a little bit of interactivity, letting them pick the "male" button or the "female" button and then showing the appropriate page.

Great advice. You might also consider targeting PPC advertisements to women. Not to sound overly sexist, but you could target keywords (cheap keywords) like shoes, handbags, perfume, etc.

The language and the incentives offered can be geared to attract one gender over the other.

How about in a ppc ad itself. Do you think the ad can be created in a way to target a specific gender?

Great point Khalid. There is a lot of research out there on how people browse through a site and particular people of specific temperaments and personalities. And of course, the research incorporates the various genders as well! Additionally, that's why personas are so helpful. If I am creating a site for 3 or 4 personas that represent my target audience, I can clearly identify what they are going to look for, how they are going to search, and how to guide them easily through my conversion funnel and process.

I think the idea of targeting specific gender can work very well. But don't you think that the biggest challenge is identifying the gender of reader who is clicking on an ad. How do we know who they are? is there an particular data on how the two different genders actually convert?
