That is very true what you said about getting half a job on a web page from someone with no experience. I have had several people come to me for a new website after some kid who learned enough to be dangerous charged them $250. for a 5 page site that was not optimized. A year later these kids have moved, got married, joined the marines or changed their phone numbers, and the owners of the websites are in a panic because they don't even know thier password to access the site!

So here's my advice, (though no one ever listens to good advice), before you hire a web page designer, ask for references and call them.

Also, ask for your password and log in information.

Great post Chris. I think your most important point precedes your numbered paragraphs! As they say, "Quality is king." Anyone who has bumbled around the internet will be amazed at the quality of the best sites. Likewise amazed at the crappiness of many small business sites. Nowadays, a good quality website is a must for any small business with an Internet presence.

I'm not sure whether Google Adwords are worth it these days. Organic search is vital, you need to be in the top. There was some useful stats from Think Eyetracking the other day http://is.gd/2Kl4

I agree, though, Chris. A blog is a great way of being found if you're a small business but it's getting harder as more businesses look to use this channel.

[...] Random Feed wrote an interesting post today onHere’s a quick excerptSmall businesses don’t have the budget to pay the big agencies for big marketing. Instead they should turn to guerrilla tactics, approach things with a bit more savvy, and with a closer eye on value for money. What often happens though is they pay cheap for a half-finished website by a local “designer” (amateur hobbyist who’s only other published site is their World of Warcraft webring). Initial results are poor so they turn their backs on the internet. Online marketing has a world of potent [...]
