Let me say up front that I am usually useless at predicting how things will go. My past record has not been fantastic and I place the few “hits” on luck. But it’s that time of year to look back or forward, and it is kind of fun, so let’s look into our crystal balls shall we?

  1. More big-ticket Internet Marketing launches – I think this is a safe one. 2007 and 2008 saw a steady stream of big multi-million dollar sell-out internet marketing product launches, and I think 2009 will see just as many, even despite the economic downturn.
  2. Flight to ROI – While I think Social Media will continue to be a big hit for the buzz crowd, I think more priority than every will be placed on testing, tracking, conversion tweaking and return on investment, which means “branding” and “eyeballs” will take a back seat and social media campaigns will have to return benefits over and above traffic spikes.
  3. Dotcoms with Business Plans – Which leads me to think that there will still be money for startups, but only those with a business plan. Already funded companies will have to find a revenue stream and quick or get bought by a sugar-daddy (I am looking at you Twitter), because I don’t think back of a napkin is going to cut it in the coming quarters.
  4. Continuity versus Single Product – Everybody is going to want a continuity product, either a subscription based service or a membership program. Predictable cashflow, constant customer contact, and a built-in focus group – it makes sense!
  5. Google goes democratic – The days of technical SEO wizardry seem to be waning, and outright manipulation will be possible for only the top SEO geniuses. For the rest of us, it seems the trend we have been seeing for some time now, ie. valuable and viral content, will be the order of the day.

Nice article. I also think that you’ll start to see some medium-sized companies that could previously afford the big ad agency “trim the fat” due to the economy, leaving more business for smaller agencies and small web shops, especially as they realize they can get good work from the smaller guys.

I think Chris is quite right in his article. Something I think we will see quite a lot more off is residual affiliate programs and so on next year.

Great observations. I might add a couple:

6. Decentralization – Overhead will be an expense many businesses can’t afford in 2009. As a result, they will try to decentralize and “go virtual” as much as possible.

7. Financial Accountability – Every business expense will be forced to justify itself. If it doesn’t pay for itself or somehow add to the success of the business, it will be eliminated.

Google goes democratic? what’s the source from you got? No change at all but your article can be used as an element basis for improvements in 2009.

It will also be a big year for “Online Reputation Management”, a new field.

See my video to learn how we can help you in that area:

This is really cool. Thanks for sharing this important info with us. I’ve already registered, but had to wait and see the phenomena. I have already referred it to lot of my friends.

Excellent info. PJ is pretty reliable although I would also recommend spreading out to other affiliate networks so as not to keep all your eggs in one basket, so to speak.

Your post is indeed very informative. These days not only amateur webmasters are doing internet marketing but also young grad students are promoting their less professional sites as their practice and projects. Articles on starting an internet marketing business are available on the internet easily.

Jeff Paul Scam Says -- January 29th, 2009 at 12:57 am

According to the Better Business Bureau, Jeff Paul Systems has earned an unsatisfactory record based on more than a half dozen categories. Because all their recent correspondence with the company came back marked “Return to Sender”, they are now referring cases to the Attorney General Consumer Protection Division.
