Barbecue 1. Any chump can put a char on a hot dog. Testing a website takes a little more than coming up with hundreds of variables to test on a single page. Use your time to understand what variables would actually make a difference with your site visitors.

2. Slow work days call for DIY optimization work. You don’t have to wait for outside consultants to tell you how to implement small changes in your website. Take some initiative.

3. A tan should be the sum of your summer experience not a bullet point on your to do list. Conversion optimization for ecommerce is an ongoing process. Forget about doing one optimization project and thinking that you are done. There is more room for improvement.

4. So you think you know a lot about your customers, but when was the last time you talked to them? Sure you can conduct online surveys and ask for feedback via email, but there is nothing as good as watching customers experience your website first hand.

5. In case you did not get the memo, using flash in your design are out. They bore your visitors and don’t help your conversion rates. If you are still using flash on your site, suck it up and ask your designers to replace with static images!

6. And if you missed the memo from last year, if you are not a designer then don’t try to design your ecommerce website. You end up with an ugly child that no one has the heart to tell you the truth about.

7. The economy is going south and everyone is talking about a recession. It is time to attract new customers and keep old ones with real promotions. I know every penny helps, but do you really think that a 5% discount is going to make jump to place an order with you?

8. No one likes a backseat driver. If someone else is trying a new marketing program, let them do it themselves without providing your invaluable advice. After all there is a one man quote per car, and one manager quote per project.

9. A 10 minute workout in the morning will not get you in amazing shape. Doing one quick round of testing is useless. Have the foresight for a multi-month plan for optimization will help get you in those skinny jeans in no time.

10. Super models are just like High conversion rates. Super models date surfers and those who are willing to take risks. High conversion rates are not going to happen without taking some real risks and investing in your site.

11. Free online forums are great for exchanging ideas but they are also a stew of bandages and scabs! Don’t take all your knowledge and strategy from Joe Shmoe who might sound knowledgeable but is still in high school.

12. Lift the blinders rock star. Yes your company might be great at many things but there is always something to learn from your competition.

13. Bonus from a reader! Sex on the beach is a disappointment, both the drink and the act. But it must be tried at least once. Some of your marketing programs will fail, some will miserably fail. But you will never know until you try them out.

I am interested in some testing now I have completed my redesign but how do I get someone really good and reasonably priced?

Everyone on the Internet brags about how good they are including you guys.

I would love to have a 14% conversion rate like you guys brag about on your website.

I do not want to risk $10,000 or more just to find out. If I can not generate alot more sells to offset your costs, it is not much good to me….

I am not trying to talk negativily about you guys but honestly and the situation as I see things.

@Audio Bible you bring up very valid points. And I see the issue of project risk as the main reason most prospects hold back from investing in conversion optimization or general marketing initiatives.

I am about to publish the results for our clients conversion rates for the first half of 2008. Some of these were great, some to be honest were disappointing.

I will also address the point you raised in a seperate blog post since I believe it deserves a good discussion.

Ha! I knew that sex on the beach bullet sounded familiar…it was in Men’s Health (minus the tie-in to marketing).

Good post, Khalid.

Very good points. I think one major factor that I did a bit of research on is if you’re site doesnt have an 800 number (or a number for that case)or atleast a chat, you will lose an incredible amount of sales.

One major way to gain quick trust is the contact between customer and company.

@Adam I had to use it :)

I love people who tell it like it is. This is a great list but I’ll bet you people will just ignore it in their quest for the golden arrow.

Online success requires hard graft, that’s the bit most people miss. They simply build a zero effort website then expect to rake in the money.

Webland is a awash with broken dreams because people won’t follow solid simple advice like that in this post.

That is a great article.
I hate taking risks, but I guess there really is no other choice.

Terry Reeves Says -- August 22nd, 2008 at 2:30 pm

I am frequently confronted with business types who say “testing a new site/page/product/service is too expensive and time consuming…”

Bull!

Open a Google Adwords account, select some targeted keywords to bid on, send targeted traffic to the page/product/service ( never the site in general ) you want to test and compare against known data or test against other variations of traffic target.

A 24 to 48 hour test in Google will cost very little and will provide a tremendous amount of information you did not know just 24 to 48 hours ago.

Those who do not test their marketing are on the road to failure. For some it is a long trip, for others, it’s just a quick trip around the corner.

Khalid Saleh Says -- August 23rd, 2008 at 6:41 pm

@RedEvo I am glad you enjoy it. Some clients don’t want to hear the truth. That is fine except that it will eventually catch up with them and hurt them in the pocket.

@Terry Reeves very well put. While the cost of testing are so little almost two thirds of business are yet to test any of their online marketing efforts.
